The Raw Truth About Animal Grief

On: Dec 22, 2021

Many people agree that the loss of a pet is the same as losing a human family member. For a lot of us, it is because that pet ‘was’ our child, our best friend, and a confidant. Our pets are with us through every up and down in our lives; they never complain, judge, or criticize. They are there for us and love us unconditionally. When our beloved pets transition to the other side, society expects us to pick them up, continue on like nothing earth shattering just happened in our lives, get right back to work, or even just’replace’ our pet immediately! It is unfortunate that in this day and age, ‘animal grief’ is still not widely accepted or respected.

When my dog Breeze died in 2016, I found this saying by A.A. Milne (Winne-the-pooh author): “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” To be honest, I was angry when I read that! That is absolute bullshit! How is this excruciating pain worth it? How am I supposed to continue my journey without my soul mate? Why is life so unfair? I felt like dying. I crawled into my bed and vowed I would never see the sun rise again, but I did. Day after arduous day, against my will, I saw the sun rise.

The next few months were very hard for me; I was living off of cigarettes and copious amounts of wine to try and numb my pain. Eventually I knew I need to forced myself to get out of bed, to eat, to shower and to continue on…somehow. I sought professional help in order to help understand my grief, I read books, practiced breathing techniques and I slept with Breeze’s ashes in hopes to find some comfort, but nothing helped.

After months of feeling like an empty shell, I had an epiphany. The only way I can feel happy again is if I can talk to and hear from Breeze! ‘If we can connect with deceased humans in the afterlife, why can’t we connect with our animals too?’ I thought. So right then and there, I made that my life’s mission, to connect with Breeze and I was willing to sell my soul for just one more moment with her.

Mediumship brought me back to life, it breathed new life in to me and I realized the power of eternal love from our animals. Mind you, it was very hard for me to connect with Breeze at first because my grief and sadness over rode everything else, but with patience and determination, I connected. I am not here to deter other forms or outlets that may help you during your grief, this was just my experience. However, here are some great alternatives, including animal communication to hopefully help your soul heal.

How To Find Peace After The Loss Of A Pet

  1. Allow Yourself To Feel
  2. Create A Memorial
  3. Ask For Support
  4. Practice Self Care
  5. Work With An Animal Communicator

1. Allow Yourself To Feel

It’s okay to feel sad, angry, or numb. Allow yourself to feel these emotions and try to embrace them. Remember that the intensity of the sorrow you are feeling now is a direct correlation of the strength of the love you have for your animal. Grieving is a way of showing that love to the universe, and being grateful for the times you had together.

2. Create a Memorial

Creating a memorial for your pet can be a healing and comforting process. You can create a scrapbook or photo album filled with memories of your pet or plant a tree in their honor. You know your pet best. What would they appreciate? Would they want you to go for a walk to their favourite spot, so you could sit there and bask in the memory of all the good times?

I recently worked with a dog named Lucky who was on ‘the other side.’ He mentioned his father was avoiding walking to ‘their special bench’ at the park. ‘my dad should go back there, tell him I will still be there with him.’

When I asked Lucky’s father about this, he became very emotional and said “Yes! I haven’t been able to bring myself to go there since his passing. We would sit there and watch the boats sail by every day!’ Lucky’s father has since continued his visits to this bench and knows that Lucky’s spirit is there with him.

3. Ask For Support

Reach out for support: Don’t be afraid to reach out to friends, family, or a support group for help during this difficult time. Sometimes, just having someone to talk to who understands can make a big difference. Animal grief isn’t fully recognized in our society but IT IS JUSTIFIED!

Know that your pet is listening, and tell them whatever you need. Ask them for a sign or to visit you in a dream!

4. Practice Self Care

Taking care of yourself is crucial during the grieving process. Make sure to get enough sleep, eat well, drink lots of water and engage in activities that you enjoy. It is ok to take time off work and hunker down for a while too. Ask yourself, how would my pet want me to live right now?

5. Work With An Animal Communicator

Animal communication is the practice of communicating with animals on a telepathic and mediumistic level. Animal communicators, also known as animal whisperers or pet communicators, are able to tap into the energy and emotions of animals and convey messages back to their human companions. While some animal communicators specialize in live animals, others are able to connect with departed pets as well.

If you’re struggling to cope with the loss of your pet, mediumship and animal communication can offer a way to connect with them again and express any feelings that were left unsaid. It can be a healing and transformative experience to know that our pets are still with us every step of the way.

Remember, everyone grieves differently, and there’s no right or wrong way to process the loss of a pet. The most important thing is to take care of yourself and allow yourself to feel your emotions. With time and support, you will be able to find healing and peace, whether that’s through connecting with your pet through mediumship and animal communication or other methods that work for you.
